Portrait: What makes the Wolfburn 12 year old - Two Turtle Doves special

While the large bottle “And a Partridge in a Pear Tree” shines proudly under the Christmas tree with a generous 700ml, its little sister “Two Turtle Doves” is somewhat more manageable – but no less charming. At 350ml, it is, so to speak, the “Compact Edition” whisky for all those who can't decide between festive joy and space in their liquor cabinet.

The inspiration, of course, comes once again from the traditional song “The Twelve Days of Christmas”. And so this bottling from the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland, Wolfburn, arrives in festive attire. The lovingly designed labels create a cheerful atmosphere even before opening – somewhere between classic Christmas and playful collector's delight. Behind the charming name, however, lies a serious whisky: aged for twelve years, carefully composed from 2013 ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks – just like its larger sibling. This makes this small release one of the oldest Wolfburn bottlings ever. Or, to put it another way: small in volume, big on maturity.
Distilled and matured, as always, according to Wolfburn tradition: by hand, without haste, with plenty of patience and North Scottish understatement. While elsewhere efficiency is being debated, in Thurso they prefer to let time do the work – and have been doing so since opening in 2013, on the foundations of the original distillery from 1821.
"Two Turtle Doves" is therefore more than just a small bottle: It's a piece of Christmas spirit in whisky form – perfect for Advent, under the Christmas tree, or as liquid proof that good things sometimes come in smaller bottles.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Wolfburn 12 year old - Two Turtle Doves tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, a balanced mix of sweet and floral aromas is presented. A subtle hint of peat smoke lies discreetly on top, without being intrusive. The aroma is harmonious, rounded, and typically Wolfburn – elegant, yet with character.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whisky shows a distinct depth and balance. Sweet impressions of honey and caramelized sugar combine with gentle spices. The sherry sweetness remains consistently present, providing structure and warmth. A full-bodied impression that reflects twelve years of maturation.
  • Finish: Long, smooth, and pleasantly lingering finish. Notes of dried fruit and caramel remain perceptible until the very end, giving the whisky a rounded, harmonious conclusion.
