Portrait: What makes the Edradour No. 2 - Inaugural Release - 200th Anniversary special
When one of Scotland's smallest distilleries turns 200 years old, a loud toast is certainly in order. And Edradour does just that – naturally in its charmingly down-to-earth way: with a whisky that breathes history and simultaneously hints at the future. Edradour No. 2 – Inaugural Release - 200th Anniversary is the first bottling from the new Edradour 2 distillery, which has shared the production still with the original since 2018 - almost like a twin, only with more room for good ideas.
Everything remains the same – in the best sense of the word. The new copper stills are exact replicas of the old ones, the worm tubs bubble as they always have, and the wooden washbacks probably creak in the same rhythm as in 1825. Edradour thus demonstrates that you can double in size without losing your soul.
For its 200th anniversary, there's now a fitting dram: a 7-year-old single malt, matured in first-fill sherry butts, bottled at a proud 57.1% ABV, naturally uncolored and non-chill filtered. On the nose, rich sherry aromas meet dark fruits, raisins, a touch of cocoa, and a hint of Christmas baking. On the palate? Full-bodied, robust, sweet and spicy – like liquid birthday cake with oak instead of icing.
The fact that this is just the beginning makes it all the more exciting: further anniversary bottlings are to follow. So anyone who thought Edradour would rest on its laurels after 200 years is sorely mistaken – they're still distilling with youthful enthusiasm.
Edradour No. 2 – Inaugural Release - 200th Anniversary is therefore more than just whisky: It is a double delight, a journey through time with a kick, and proof that fresh ideas still flow even in old age. Or, as they would say in the Highlands: "Old stills, new thrills!" Distilled: 2018 Bottled: 2025 Cask Type: First-Fill Sherry Butts
Conclusion: A classic Edradour at its best - rich, sherry-forward, and full of character. The first whisky from Edradour 2 proves: double stills, but the same unmistakable style.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour No. 2 - Inaugural Release - 200th Anniversary tastes like
Nose: Strong sherry influence with aromas of raisins, dates, and dark chocolate. Underlying these are nuances of roasted nuts, orange peel, and slightly spicy oak. A hint of toffee and malt rounds off the complex bouquet.
Palate: Full-bodied and intense – sweet dried fruits, caramel, and candied nuts meet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. With a little water, hints of espresso, oak spice, and light tobacco emerge. The alcohol content of 57.1% ABV adds warmth and depth without disrupting the balance.
Finish: Long and warming with notes of sherry, dark cocoa, and a hint of oak. A subtle dryness lingers, accompanied by sweet malt and persistent fruitiness.
