Portrait: What makes the North British 33 year old Single Grain Whisky Thompson Bros. special
Anyone who believes that good whisky has to be expensive, peaty, and from a fancy distillery in the Highlands has never tasted a grain whisky from Thompson Bros.. The two brothers Phil and Simon Thompson have long since made a name for themselves – not with marketing, but with taste. And with a starting point that sounds more like a garden shed than a large-scale operation: a converted fire station at Dornoch Castle.
From there, they conquered the whisky world - first with a legendary bar, then with hand-picked bottlings as independent bottlers. And now? They're demonstrating once again that they have a knack for underappreciated treasures: With this North British 33 year old Single Grain, they deliver liquid gold for connoisseurs and bargain hunters alike.
North British, founded in 1885 in Edinburgh, is one of the great old grain distilleries - but more of a silent giant in the background than a star in the spotlight. The Thompsons do what they do best: They bring a mature classic out of the shadows, inscribe "Thompson Bros." on it, forgo any frills - and let the cask speak for itself.
They'll remain in their micro-distillery until 2026. Then it'll move on to the new Struie Distillery. More space, more options - but hopefully not a bit less charm.
Conclusion: This 33-year-old is proof that old Grain is anything but boring. More like a great-uncle with dry wit and very expensive taste. Except that here he remains surprisingly affordable.
