Portrait: What makes the Miltonduff 2011 100 Proof Edition #54 Signatory Vintage special
What do the historic British Navy, gunpowder, and whisky have in common? Exactly: 57.1% vol. alcohol - the magic threshold at which you find out whether the dram in your glass or your bonfire will burn first. Welcome to the 100 Proof series from Signatory Vintage - and especially to the rowdy Edition #54: Miltonduff 2011/2025.
This Speysider was bottled with plenty of steam - straight from the maturation prison, sorry: from hogsheads and sherry butts, where it flexed its muscles for around 14 years. The result? A true Highland product with plenty of character, a proper presence – and thankfully without a beard or eye patch.
The Miltonduff distillery, founded in the 19th century near Elgin, has a long history – and is something of an unsung hero in the background of many blends (keyword: Ballantine's). But beware, if you let it take center stage: then it quickly becomes apparent that this single malt is not just an accessory, but a powerful star.
With its 100 Proof range, Signatory Vintage brings whiskies to market that impress not only in terms of taste, but also in terms of price – strong percentages, low prices, great joy. Now that's a deal!
Conclusion: The Miltonduff 2011/2025 Edition #54 is like a cheerful bagpiper on caffeine – loud, idiosyncratic, memorable. And it's guaranteed to burn – just hopefully not down the shelf.
Note: Due to the cask strength, adding a few drops of water is recommended – for safety and for the enjoyment of details.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Miltonduff 2011 100 Proof Edition #54 Signatory Vintage tastes like
- Nose: intense and warming - the 57.1%vol. demonstrate immediate presence - a generous portion of fig jam opens the bouquet, accompanied by dried fruits, a hint of sherry sweetness, and cinnamon - behind this, aromas of roasted almonds, fresh wood, and a fine malty warmth unfold - a subtle hint of cloves and cocoa powder rounds off the complex aroma
- Palate: robust and full-bodied - not a whisky for the faint-hearted - the sweet and spicy combination of dark fruits, caramel, and warm spices lingers on the palate - the influence of the hogsheads provides a compact wood spice, while the sherry influence manifests itself in the form of raisins, nutmeg, and a hint of orange zest - surprisingly balanced despite the high alcohol content - a few drops of water open up even further nuances
- Finish: long and warming with a pleasant aftertaste - oak spice, a hint of pepper, and roasted notes of coffee and a light nutty aroma (almond, hazelnut) - the fruity sweetness slowly fades away and makes way for dry, elegant wood notes and a final greeting of cinnamon
