Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 11 special
The independent Glengyle distillery was founded in 1872 by William Mitchell and produced a typical Campbeltown malt for half a century before the company closed its doors in 1925.
For more than 70 years it looked as if this decision was final.
At the turn of the millennium, however, Winifred Ewing and Hedley Wright made up their mind, both descendants of the Mitchell family, to enter the new era with increased knowledge: After a construction phase of four years, the distillery was ceremoniously reopened on March 25, 2004.
That the new malt “Kilkerran” reflects the pride in the long tradition of whiskey distilling in the region: the name is derived from “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain”, a early Christian settlement that once stood where Campbeltown is found today.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 11 tastes like
- Nose: typical Kilkerran aromas of fresh citrus fruits - lime and fresh lime cake are present, followed by toasted rye bread and peat smoke
- Palate: roasted marshmallows and burning logs from a campfire carry the taste, along with notes of vanilla pods and fresh Vanilla sauce
- Finish: the finish is carried by peat smoke - plus light mineral tones
