Portrait: What makes the Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2024 Marlborough special
Who says that great white wine only comes from France or Germany? May? The Kiwis in New Zealand have their own opinion – and it's called Oyster Bay.
Founded as a pioneer in the then-wine-free region of Marlborough, Oyster Bay has quickly evolved from an insider tip to a global star – and all without any pretensions. It's not about glamour and glory here, but about what ends up in the glass. So a little bit of Gloria after all.
The vineyards are nestled in a picturesque landscape where sheep know more about Sauvignon than many people. The combination of a cool, maritime climate, alluvial soils, and an eternally long growing season ensures the best grape conditions—a kind of wellness retreat for vines.
Michael Ivecivich, the head winemaker with the unpronounceable surname, ensures that every bottle contains exactly what defines New Zealand: nature, clarity, character—and a little bit of adventure.
Sustainable? Of course. Oyster Bay is a founding member of the "Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand" program. Screw cap? Logical. After all, this isn't about corkscrew skills, but rather uncomplicated enjoyment.
Best served at 8–10°C, with anything that can't run away: fish, chicken, pasta, pizza, vegetables... or simply on its own. It can be aged for up to 3 years, but let's be honest—who can stand that long?
Oyster Bay - Sauvignon Blanc with a wanderlust factor. Conclusion: A typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc – aromatic, fresh, and precise. Ideal for lovers of expressive white wines with a clear structure and fruit accentuation.
