Portrait: What makes the Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013 special

19 island farmers are now taking on the challenge of growing the highest quality barley
on Islay for Bruichladdich. What once began as a small terroir concept has developed into something very important to the island community of Islay, as whisky distilling has now become the largest industry alongside fishing and agriculture.
With the Islay Barley range Bruichalddich has always been looking for the pure taste of the island. For years, Bruichladdich has been perfecting the idea of terroir and raw materials whose origins can be tasted in the single malt whisky.
Because at Bruichladdich they firmly believe that soil, climate, microclimate, geographical location as well as natural and weather influences have an impact on quality and have the aroma profile of a spirit and thus become the pure expression of a region of origin.
Nowhere else could this approach be more exciting than on Islay.
So are the sea, the wild landscape and the harsh climate the reason for this expressive single malts? Is it the salty air and the spray of the Atlantic that have a positive effect on the Casks and their contents?
The barley for the Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013 comes from seven farms on the island of Islay. Maturation took place in a mixture of 75% first-fill American and 25% second-fill European oak. This special recipe ensures a balanced ratio of wood and barley.
