One of the most diverse countries in the world is located in northwestern South America on the Pacific coast.
Sugar cane is also cultivated in Ecuador between the rainforests in the Amazon basin, the highlands in the Andes and the plains on the coast.
Compared to other Latin American countries, however, it is less extensive.
Rum qualities from Ecuador based on sugar cane therefore rarely enrich the European market.
In 1906, Alfonso Romero began building copper stills in the heart of the Ecuadorian capital and laid the foundation for Ecuador's oldest craft distillery.
Today, Alfonso's grandsons, siblings Johan and Ivanova Romero, run the family business from the Andes.
The two invest knowledge, experience and an impressive portfolio from several generations into their own brand.
Romero & Sons produce using the same fermentation, distillation and aging techniques used by founder Alfonso Romero over the past century.
The result: an authentic product that is characterized by impeccable technology and quality.
Due to the low capacities of the Ecuadorian distillery, the Romero & Sons 9 Year Old comes to connoisseurs as a small-batch bottling.
Not colored or sweetened, it pairs XO molasses rum with 9-year-old rum made from sugar cane juice - thus combining the smooth profile of molasses with the fruity character of aged "cane rums".
Distilled, aged and bottled in their own facilities at almost 3,000 meters above sea level, Romero & Sons 9 Years Old is a highly complex rum with a pleasant, lingering finish.
Nose: the rum opens with the classic, smooth warmth of an aged molasses rum
Palate: Plums and wild berries dominate at the beginning and then slowly give way to the fruity, grassy notes of the sugar cane juice.
