Who is Alexander? And which way was his?
Alexander - more precisely Dr. Alexander Cowie - was the son of George Cowie.
The two built and developed Mortlach Distillery, founded in 1823 by James Findlater.
After the death of his father George in 1896, Alexander returned from Hong Kong and took over the management of the distillery.
It was also Alexander Cowie who introduced the extraordinary 2.81x distillation and made the "Beast of Mortlach" (so called because of the "meaty" single malt) great.
The bottling is a tribute to Alexander Cowie - bottled at 14 years old.
The Mortlach 14 Years 2.81 Distilled matured in former bourbon and sherry casks.
Nose: Spicy at the beginning with clear aromas of grated nutmeg and cloves - then becoming fruitier with fresh fruit, some vanilla and spicy cedar wood
Palate: mouth-filling and spicy - the aromas are present again, then ripe juicy oranges and nectarines follow - again some vanilla in the background
Finish: long finish with sweet tones of light chocolate and ripe berries - above all, slightly spicy wood tones
