The seven-year-old Bunnahabhain Staoisha is a typical Islay whisky - and therefore an atypical Bunnahabhain.
Actually, Bunnahabhain is a bit out of the (Islay) series.
The single malts from this distillery in the northeast of the island are traditionally finer, milder and, above all, less peated than many of Islay's famous neighbors such as Islay. B. Ardbeg, Lagavulin or Laphroaig.
But the Staoisha is a single malt whisky that has everything that friends of Islay whisky appreciate: peat, smoke and plenty of power!
The Bunnahabhain Staoisha embodies this character perfectly.
Bottled at the young age of seven and with a cask strength of 59.5%vol. Alcohol content, he has an irrepressible power.
He is also "heavily peated".
Unlike Bunnahabain, the barley malt used was heavily peated.
This provides the powerful spicy smoke notes.
And the barrels also play their part.
"Dechar/Rechar" is written on the very detailed label.
This indicates that the inside of the hogsheads used (former bourbon casks with around 225 liters) were planed off and heavily burned out again.
Responsible for this unusual bottling is not the Bunnahabhain distillery itself, but one of the big "independent bottlers": Signatory Vintage.
The company has enjoyed an excellent reputation for its excellent single cask bottlings for many years.
Chef Andrew Symington has it easy, the proverbial good nose for the right barrel!
This single cask bottling was named after Loch Staoisha, a small, remote lake not far from Bunnahabhain.
Its water is used by the distillery to cool the stills.
Nose: clear smoke aromas like smoked meat over a campfire and a pleasant sweetness of honey, aromas of citrus fruits in the background.
Palate: very powerful on the tongue, but round and not pungent - the citrus notes of limes and oranges are accompanied by further fruity notes reminiscent of pears and ripe apples - above all the spicy smoke and a hint of dark pepper
Finish: medium length and intense, the peat smoke lasts
