Inchgower is intensely flavorful, due to a hotter than usual second water during rapid mashing that reduces any obvious nuttiness.
Fermentation is short and the steeply angled Lyne arms on the stills help capture heavier elements.
An underlying waxiness sends a signal to another coastal plant, clynelish.
Worth knowing about the distillery
Inchgower was built in Speyside in 1871 after distiller Alexander Wilson was evicted from the nearby Tochineal distillery, which his uncle had built 40 years earlier when the landlord doubled the rent.
The distillery was purchased by the Buckie Council in 1936 after Alexander Wilson & Co. went out of business.
Bell's was purchased by Guinness in the 1980s and ownership passed to United Distillers in 1987.
Inchgower is therefore now part of Diageo.
Nose: honey, ripe melons, bananas and some coconut - with a little water green, ripe apples and a floral freshness
Palate: Vanilla, tangerines and marshmallows, plus yellow fruits, bitter lemon and a hint of ginger, slightly spicy - much nuttier with a little water
Finish: Dry, nutty finish with tones of almonds and candied nectarines
