The Teaninich Scotch Whisky Distillery was built in 1817 and is located in the Scottish Highlands in Alness.
The founder of Teaninich was Captain Hugh Munro.
The water source for this distillery is Dairywell Spring.
Very close to this distillery are The Dalmore and Glenmorangie Distilleries.
The distillery's fragrant, exotic and grassy New Make spirit is the result of replacing a mash tun with a hammer mill and mash filter - the only technology of its kind in Scotland when it was installed in 2000.
Using technology that eliminates the need for a mash tun should produce a crystal-clear wort that gives a hint of the Teaninich Distillery's character: a fragrant exotic grassiness reminiscent of Japanese green tea and coumarin-rich bison grass.
Large stills also add a distinct oiliness to the texture without dulling the penetrating acidity.
Worth knowing about the distillery
In 1887, Teaninich was the first distillery north of Inverness to have electricity and a telephone.
Teaninich remained in the hands of the Munro family until 1904 when Robert Innes Cameron, formerly the majority shareholder, became the sole owner.
In 1970 the distillery was greatly expanded and a completely new building with six new stills was put into operation.
The four older stills remained operational alongside the new stills.
Nose: sweet grain, malty with aromas of yeast and cider - significantly more malt and yeast with a little water, less sweet - slightly woody aromas
Palate: powerful and intense with notes of lime, orange and burnt orange oil - a slight bitter note of citrus fruits, plus toffee and vanilla
Finish: medium-length finish - peppery with bite - malty tones paired with cornflakes and beeswax
