During the last century, nearly one hundred of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries were either closed or destroyed - many in the name of progress
These venerable brands were forever lost - until now!
The Lost Distillery Company is independent and wants to bring the old names and their whiskeys back to life.
For this purpose, historical documents with a lot of research are used to create new interpretations of these long-forgotten whiskeys.
Used for these whiskeys young and old barrels, which give a taste profile that corresponds to 15-18 years old whiskey.
Stratheden is the second bottling of the Lost Distillery Company. The distillery, founded in 1829, was closed by the consequences of Prohibition in 1926. Today, there are still parts of the original buildings with references to the glorious past.
The label of this bottling has the color of the door to the old warehouse of the distillery.
At the end of their existence, the distillery was also known as Auchtermuchty. It belonged to the Bonthrone family, who were known as brewers and maltsters in the area - back to the year 1600.
The founder of the distillery was Alexander Bonthrone who allegedly burned whiskey until his death in 1890. At the age of 92, he became Scotland's oldest master distiller.
The whiskey was said to be "one of the best".
One of the peculiarities of the distillery was the unique water source, known as the Lovers Pool, which was passed through an aqueduct to the three watermills of Stratheden Distillery.
Peat from the Orkney Islands provided the powerful character of this whiskey.
Aroma: very fruity, clear orange peel and fresh fruits
Taste: the fruits are exotic - banana and mango in front - then come to clear honey and chocolate notes
Finish: long, warm finish
