Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran 16 year old special

If there were such a thing as underground whisky in Campbeltown, then Kilkerran would be the secret headliner. It is produced at the Glengyle Distillery, which - be careful - should not be confused with Glenlivet, Glenfarclas, or any other glen. Glengyle is small, independent, proud—and part of the Springbank family. So, it's the little cousin who always arrives a little later at parties but then wins everyone over with his character.

The Kilkerran 16 year old is the distillery's mature flagship. No marketing hype, no big show - just an honest single malt with backbone. And honestly: If you've been lying around in Campbeltown for 16 years without giving up, you've earned your place on the shelf anyway.

The Glengyle Distillery was founded in 1872, then took a break for over 80 years (sure, it happens), and was only revived in 2004 - by the same whisky enthusiasts who also run Springbank. So much for reliability.

And why Kilkerran and not Glengyle?? Quite simply: The name "Glengyle" was already trademarked. So the whisky was named after "Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain," the Gaelic name for the town of Campbeltown. Sounds complicated? That's precisely why it's called Kilkerran.

If you appreciate whisky with heritage, attitude, and a dash of stubbornness, you've come to the right place. Kilkerran 16 year old isn't a loudspeaker - but it's a whisperer with depth.

Campbeltown through and through - and finally, a teenager who doesn't cause trouble.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilkerran 16 year old tastes like

  • Nose: A seductive opening with intense aromas of dried plums, sweet marzipan, and dark chocolate, interspersed with a subtle orange note - rich, warm, and inviting.
  • Palate: Lively and complex. Sweet notes of maraschino cherry syrup and dates meet spicy accents of licorice and star anise. A gentle peat smokiness subtly underpins the aromatic structure, while a hint of sweet cinnamon toast adds additional warmth and depth.
  • Finish: The finish is maritime and nutty with a slightly salty sea breeze. Notes of roasted hazelnuts, fresh mint, and tart-sweet Morello cherries complete the experience.
