Portrait: What makes the D'Aristi Xtabentún Liqueur special

Imagine a Mayan priest, a beekeeper, a pirate with a penchant for rum, and a wild anise plant meet in a cenote... No, that's no joke - that's the approximate birth of Xtabentún D'Aristi.

This mystical tipple comes directly from the heart of Yucatán, where bees diligently collect nectar from Xtabentún blossoms - blossoms said to be so enchanting that even the gods pause for a moment. So what do the locals do with this divine honey? That's right, they ferment it, add some anise and a generous helping of rum, and then call the whole thing culture.

Xtabentún is no ordinary liqueur - it's liquid Mayan poetry with a touch of rebellion. Supposedly, the ancient Mayans drank similar brews to speak with the gods. Today, it's more likely to help you start a conversation with the bartender. Or with your mother-in-law. Depending on how much you drink.

It also looks impressive: Golden and emerald green tones sparkle like the treasure of a lost civilization - perfect if you want to make an impression at your next cocktail party.

Whether after dinner, on ice, or stylishly in a coffee - Xtabentún D’Aristi is like a mini vacation in Yucatán. Only without the jet lag. And with more rum.

Cheers - or as they say in Yucatán: ¡Salud y magia!

The Xtabentún D'Aristi is best served ice cold or on ice cubes with a little runny honey.
It is also an excellent ingredient in long drinks and shots with coffee or tequila.

Tasting Notes: This is how the D'Aristi Xtabentún Liqueur tastes like

  • Nose: Clearly perceptible anise is in the foreground, accompanied by fresh, herbal aromas such as mint and grass. A mild honey sweetness rounds out the fragrance profile. Floral nuances and a light citrus note appear in the background. Overall, a balanced, aromatic-fresh bouquet with a light spiciness.
  • Palate: Soft and harmonious on the palate. The anise is present, yet well integrated into a moderate sweetness. The honey gives the liqueur a gentle depth, supported by a subtle herbal spice. The rum provides structure, but remains restrained in flavor. The aromas are well balanced and clearly defined.
  • Finish: Medium-length with a pleasant warmth. The anise fades slowly, accompanied by a light honey note and subtle herbal freshness. There's no dominant aftertaste, but rather a calm, clean finish.

The Legend of Xtabentún

According to an ancient Mayan legend, there once lived two exceptionally beautiful women: Xtabay and Utz-Colel. As similar as they were in appearance, they were fundamentally different in heart and soul. Xtabay was wild, free, and courageous—a vibrant spirit full of zest for life. Utz-Colel, on the other hand, was considered cold, hard, and selfish.

After their deaths, something miraculous happened: a delicate white flower bloomed on Xtabay's grave, whose intoxicating scent and natural beauty deeply touched the people. In her honor, they named it "Xtabentún." On Utz-Colel's grave, however, nothing grew. Not a stalk, not a leaf. Only emptiness.

The Xtabentún flower, with its lovely aroma and delicate sweetness, became something special to the Maya. They used their nectar to make ritual drinks - food for the spirit, balm for the soul.

Thus, the Maya say, the free, wild spirit of the Xtabay lives on in every blossom and every drop - to this day.
