Peat Monster Arcana is an expansion of the regular Peat Monster - based on an experiment. Between 2016 and 2017, Compass Box filled three of the French oak barrels they had made for them with a high-proof version of the Peat Monster: What aromas would result from the second use of the hybrid barrels? Since Compass Box had never matured peaty whisky in French oak, Compass Box was curious to see how the character would develop - two little puzzles in one attempt, so to speak. Ten percent of the Peat Monster Arcana is those flavorful, subtly smoky versions of The Peat Monster. Malt whisky from the Talisker Distillery consists mainly of notes of wax, green fruits and embers from wood fire. Malt whisky from the Ardbeg Distillery enhances the tarry and chocolaty smoke profile and perfectly expands the rich roasted notes of French oak. A little of the Compass Box Highland Malt Blend, matured in new, heavily roasted French oak, and a little sweet and citrus-fruity malt whisky from the Miltonduff Distillery round off the recipe. Tasting Notes: Nose: full aromas of chocolate, cinnamon and tar give impressions of salty sea air and seaweed Taste: Notes of algae and ripe apples on the palate with an extremely waxy texture can be heard Finish: the peatiness, dry and deep in character, builds up steadily The play between spices and dry peat is most intense when enjoyed pure. After adding water, a woody sweetness and diverse fruit aromas unfold, while the waxy notes are emphasized in a mixed form. What is the secret - "the arcanum" - of whisky production? Compass Box uses the term to denote the mysteries and secrets of barrel aging. New questions about oak and the aging process are constantly emerging. "Arcana" can mean that information is withheld. But Compass Box does not believe in keeping secrets about the whiskeys they make. You will always be as transparent as possible to those who want to know. Peat Monster Arcana explores how smoky whisky interacts with French oak. It started with a large barrel version of The Peat Monster, the blend of smoky malt whiskys, which were then filled into three previously used barrels - these were equipped with heavily toasted French oak lids. After a long period of maturation, they found that two of the barrels added creaminess and toasted flavor to the whisky, while the contents of the third barrel became fruity and chocolatier. To build on the exciting influences of these refilled specialty barrels, Compass Box used malt whiskeys that had never been used before in The Peat Monster: the majority of the recipe consists of waxy and delicate smoky malt whisky from the Talisker distillery, while small amounts of malt whisky from the Ardbeg and Miltonduff distilleries give aromas of tarry peat and a charming fruitiness. Peat Monster Arcana has a more oak-toned frame than The Peat Monster, endowed with a more subtle smokiness - and although like all Compass Box whiskys it may be inspired by mysteries, its intended purpose is completely straightforward: Above all, share & enjoy!
