Portrait: What makes the Tanqueray No. Ten special

Some bottles are nice. Others make a statement. The 1.0-liter bottle of Tanqueray No. Ten clearly belongs to the second category - not only because of its size, but because of its attitude. At 47.3% ABV. She stands there like a British gentleman, offering polite greetings but simultaneously making it clear: "I'm not here for fun. Well... maybe I am. But in style."

The story behind it begins in 1830 in London. A certain Charles Tanqueray had the bold idea of not just producing gin, but of producing it with uncompromising quality standards. While others were still experimenting, Tanqueray focused on precision and craftsmanship.
This paid off: The brand survived fashion trends, export adventures, and even the bombing of the original distillery in World War II. Today, Tanqueray is distilled in Scotland – but its heart still beats to the rhythm of Victorian London. "No. Ten" refers to the small still number 10 in which this gin is produced. Small but mighty – practically the bespoke tailoring studio of distilleries. While elsewhere large facilities are in operation, here they deliberately focus on smaller batches. That sounds like handcrafted work, and that's exactly what it is.
Only with a very well-tailored bow tie. The 1.0-liter version also conveys a certain generosity.
It signals: This isn't a half-measure, this is a stylish, high-end gin. Perfect for long evenings, larger gatherings, or simply for people who don't like to make two trips. Visually, the bottle remains an eye-catcher – green, streamlined, with a clear structure. It looks like a design object with a mission. In short: Tanqueray No. Ten is not a gin that imposes itself.
He simply stands there, sovereign, mindful of tradition and with almost two centuries of history behind him – and lets others do the work of being impressed.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Tanqueray No. Ten tastes like

  • Nose: Fresh and clear with a distinct juniper presence. Bright citrus aromas – especially grapefruit and lime – are also present, creating a very vibrant impression. Floral nuances such as chamomile and a fine, elegant spiciness emerge in the background. Overall, the bouquet is precise, clean, and exceptionally well-balanced, without any overpowering alcoholic harshness.
  • Palate: On the palate, the gin is structured and multifaceted. Juniper forms the stable foundation, while fresh citrus notes provide vibrancy. The texture is soft and slightly creamy, which is remarkably smooth for a gin with 47.3% ABV. Subtle floral and slightly spicy components add depth and complexity. Despite its intensity, the overall impression remains harmonious and elegant.
  • Finish: Medium to long-lasting. The juniper lingers clearly, accompanied by dry, subtly tart citrus notes. A delicate spiciness pleasantly remains on the palate. The finish is dry, clean, and very precise – with an elegant warmth that pleasantly integrates the higher alcohol content.
