Portrait: What makes the Mortlach 16 year old special
Mortlach 16 year old – it sounds a bit like the name of a Scottish hero battling mythical creatures in the mists of the Highlands. And indeed, this single malt has a similarly venerable heritage. Born in Speyside, the heart of the Scottish whisky world, he comes from the traditional Mortlach distillery, which has been distilling so reliably since 1823 that one might think its stills had their own calendar of “sacred distillation days”.
Mortlach is known for its legendary 2.8-fold distillation – a process that sounds so complicated it could have been invented by a mathematician with a penchant for copper stills. While other distilleries calmly double-distill, Mortlach apparently thought, "Well, we'll just do it... differently." The result is a production method so idiosyncratic that it has now achieved cult status. No wonder Mortlach is affectionately called "The Beast of Dufftown" – not because it roars, but because its stills supposedly have a mind of their own.
The Mortlach 16 year old spent its entire maturation period in ex-sherry casks. You could say it underwent a long-term apprenticeship in aromatic education, overseen by oak that has seen a lot. And without delving into the realm of taste: Anyone who's anyone in the Scottish whisky world knows that sherry casks have a special way of shaping their offspring – very patiently, very consistently. Brand enthusiasts appreciate Mortlach for its blend of tradition, a boldness of individuality, and a good dose of understatement.
Although Mortlach is considered a hidden gem among connoisseurs, the distillery itself maintains a pleasantly understated demeanor. No grand pronouncements, no loud campaigns – just honest craftsmanship and a distillation process so complex it almost deserves its own religion.
The Mortlach 16 year old is therefore perfect for anyone who loves whisky with personality – and enjoys a chuckle when a Speyside distillery acts like the rebel of the Highlands. Slàinte!
Tasting Notes: This is how the Mortlach 16 year old tastes like
Nose: Robust aromas of ripe red fruits open the bouquet, accompanied by a warm scent of cloves and nutmeg, which lends the whole a spicy depth.
Palate: Full-bodied and balanced, it displays distinct notes of dark berries. The influence of the sherry casks is unmistakable. Gentle spicy notes, again characterized by cloves and nutmeg, pervade everything.
Finish: It fades softly and slightly sweet, leaving a harmonious conclusion.
