Charles James was the son of Mary Stuart and her second husband Lord Darnley.
When his mother had to abdicate a year after giving birth, he was named Jakob VI. appointed Scottish king.
After Elisabeth I. died childless in 1603, he also received the crown of England and Ireland as James I.
