Portrait: What makes the Aberlour Triple Cask special
In the heart of the picturesque village of Aberlour in the Scottish region – where there are more distilleries per square meter than sheep (or so it seems) – a distillery was established that since Aberlour, founded in 1879, knows how to bottle tradition.
Founded by James Fleming, a man with vision, a beard, and presumably an impressive liver, the brand quickly became a mainstay among Scottish single malts. The name "Aberlour" comes from Gaelic and means "mouth of the babbling brook." Romantic, isn't it? Indeed, water plays a starring role here – more precisely, the spring water from Ben Rinnes, which has flowed through the stills for generations and probably knows more secrets than the village post office. And then there's the Triple Cask.
As the name suggests, this single malt has had a mini cask conference: Two different types of American oak casks and an ex-sherry cask made of European oak were allowed to work together on its maturation. You could say it was an international summit meeting of wood, where each cask nation contributed its own personality – without any diplomatic incidents. The result is a whisky with distinct notes of vanilla and butterscotch, accompanied by velvety blackcurrant tones. But instead of drifting into poetic reveries, let's just say this: The Triple Cask is less of a daredevil, more of a gentleman.
Someone who wears tweed without looking prim and proper, and who appreciates tradition without standing still. Today, Aberlour belongs to the French Pernod Ricard group, proving that good Scottish ideas are appreciated internationally – even by nations that primarily prefer wine.
In short: The Aberlour Triple Cask is Speyside in its purest form – down-to-earth, steeped in tradition, and with a charming wink. Slàinte!
Tasting Notes: This is how the Aberlour Triple Cask tastes like
Nose: A gentle, inviting sweetness rises first into the glass. Distinct aromas of vanilla and butterscotch mingle with ripe blackcurrants. These are followed by notes of honey, caramelized sugar, and a hint of toasted oak. With a little time, subtle nuances of dried fruit, almonds, and a light spiciness reminiscent of freshly sanded wood unfold.
Palate: Soft and rounded on the palate with a balanced texture. Sweet vanilla cream and toffee go hand in hand with dark berries, especially blackcurrant. Caramel and milk chocolate provide depth, while subtle spice notes - such as cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg - lend structure. The different cask types create a harmonious balance between sweetness, fruitiness, and delicate spice.
Finish: Medium to long, pleasantly smooth. Delicate oak spice lingers, accompanied by butterscotch and a touch of dark fruit. Towards the end, a slight dryness emerges with subtle spice notes, giving the whisky an elegant, warm finish.
