Portrait: What makes the Säntis Malt Edition Trinity special
The Säntis Malt Edition Dreifaltigkeit is a powerful Swiss single malt whisky from the Locher AG brewery in the heart of Appenzell. The family business looks back on a long history: Since 1886, the Locher family, now in its fifth generation, has been producing beer and spirits. With the lifting of the grain distilling ban in 1999, the company ventured into the world of whisky – and quickly became a pioneer in the young Swiss whisky scene.
Only regional ingredients are used in its production: crystal-clear spring water from the Alpstein massif, local barley malt, and peat from nearby moors, such as the Weissbad raised moor, which is used to kiln the malt. The whisky is aged in old oak barrels that previously housed Appenzeller beer for decades - some of them over a hundred years old. This special maturation gives the edition its distinctive character and underscores the close connection to the local brewing and distilling tradition.
At 52% ABV, the trinity is bottled at cask strength - natural, unfiltered, and without coloring. As an integral part of the Säntis Malt range, it was named European Whisky of the Year by the "Whisky Bible" in 2010 - a milestone for Swiss whisky art.
Tasting Notes: This is what the Säntis Malt Edition Trinity tastes like
- Nose: Burnt brown sugar and earthy aromas of fresh vanilla - soft smoke over everything
- Palate: Soft butterscotch and thick honey, then ground pepper, smoked bacon, and campfire smoke
- Finish: Strong malt notes and freshly baked goods - again the smoke and bacon
