"Lang may yer lum reek" (Gaelic "long may your chimney smoke") - the Scottish saying is a greeting for a long life.
The origin of this peated blended malt whiskey is found in Harvey MacNair, on an autumn evening after a lake fishing day in the 1860s, distiller Harvey Mac Nair indulged in a dram whiskey in the local pub, The Old Stone Bothy, near the distillery GlenAllachie.
The chimney of the house did not move properly and so the room filled with smoke, which would have been an occasion for anyone else to leave the house, was for Harvey MacNair - and especially for his whiskey - just right - the whiskey tasted him much better now!
Today's Master Distiller Billy Walker of Glen Allachie has re-created this highly peated whiskey - but with a little more caution and science than Harvey MacNair over a hundred years ago.
Aroma: strong peat flavors and barley sugar, with dark chocolate
Taste: full body and lots of peat, then vanilla, again barley sugar and tannins, followed by herbs and sweet spices
Finish: peat smoke and tannins on the finish - above all spicy notes of herbs - especially Gagelstrauch
