Portrait: What makes the Plantation O.F.T.D. Overproof special
Anyone who thinks rum is only for cocktails with umbrellas has definitely not encountered Plantation O.F.T.D. yet. This overproof rum (yes, with a whopping 69% ABV) is not for the faint of heart - or thin ice cubes.
Behind the abbreviation O.F.T.D. is “Old Fashioned Traditional Dark” – and that's not an empty phrase, but an honest statement. The whole thing was created by Plantation mastermind Alexandre Gabriel and six other rum enthusiasts. It sounds a bit like a pirate trip around the world – only with better glasses.
In the glass ends up a blend of three distinctive rum nations: Guyana (fermented for one week, aged for 1-2 years in new and old barrels), Jamaica (two weeks of fermentation - they take it seriously there - a rum aged for 1-2 years in old and new oak barrels, and a rum aged for 14 years in new barrels!), and Barbados (fermented for 3 days – make progress! 2-5 years of aging). Distillation ranges from pot stills (in Jamaica) to twin columns (and pot stills - in Barbados) to the legendary Port Mourant double wooden still (in Guyana). As if that weren't enough, the blend is finished for 3-6 months in small used Ferrand cognac barrels in France - because good rum also needs a bit of French flair.
In short: O.F.T.D. is like an international summit - only louder, stronger, and significantly more drinkable.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Plantation O.F.T.D. Overproof tastes like
- Nose: Powerful, intense, and clearly defined - the nose is enveloped by aromas of freshly brewed coffee, ripe oranges, dark plums, and fruity jam - accompanied by a hint of fine truffle, which lends the bouquet a special depth
- Palate: On the palate, this overproof rum reveals itself with impressive richness and complexity - caramel cream, dark chocolate, and vanilla open the palate, followed by a warming spice of cinnamon and nutmeg. Raisins, oak, and robust molasses add depth, while subtle smoky accents provide an exciting balance
- Finish: Long, intense, and persistent - with dark chocolate, spicy caramel, and a distinctive clove note. In the empty glass, aromas of brown cane molasses, oak, and juicy plum linger
