Portrait: What makes the A.H. Riise Family Reserve Solera 1838 special
There are things so good that you'd rather keep them to yourself. Grandma's secret recipe. The perfect parking space. And – until not so long ago – the A.H. Riise Family Reserve Solera 1838. Originally, this rum was a true family secret – strictly limited and available only to members of the Riise dynasty. So, anyone who didn't receive an invitation to the Riise Christmas dinner was simply out of luck.
Fortunately, people are a bit more relaxed about it these days. Instead of just giving it to cousin Ole, A.H. Riise bottles around 2,000 bottles of this liquid family tree entry every year – as a tribute to his own history and as a generous gesture to us mere mortals.
The Family Reserve is produced using the complex Solera process – a system that sounds like a piece of music, but really just means: Old and young rums are cleverly blended in several barrels until they form a harmonious whole. On average, the rums in this Solera are 25 years old – practically at their prime drinking age.
The name A.H. Riise itself goes back to the Danish pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise, who lived on the Caribbean island of St. Thomas in the 19th century. What was originally sold as medicine quickly became a luxury item - and not without reason.
So: If you ever thought family recipes were boring, this one proves the opposite. A rum with history, style, and that certain "I'm not really made for sales" factor. Thank you, Riise family, for sharing your best-kept secret with us!
