Portrait: What makes the Edradour 10 year old special
In a sleepy valley east of Pitlochry, nestled between green hills and Scottish tranquility, lies Edradour - a distillery so small you'd almost think it could fit in a hiking backpack. And that's by no means an exaggeration: With only three permanent employees, Edradour produces as much whisky in a year as the big guys go through in a week. Quality doesn't require an assembly line.
The distillery was founded in the 19th century, but its whisky has only been available as a single malt since 1982. Before that, Edradour was primarily known as the basis for the "House of Lords" blend – yes, the one served in the British House of Lords. It doesn't get much more royal than that.
The big change came in 2002, when Andrew Symington, head of Signatory Vintage, took the helm. Since then, Edradour has become not only "Scotland's little gem," but also one of the most charming distilleries for fans of handcrafted whiskies.
The 10-year-old Standard is now a rock in the Highland storm: an honest, traditional dram, matured in 100% sherry casks, with a reputation greater than the distillery itself.
Small but mighty, Edradour shows that true greatness isn't measured in liters, but in passion, patience, and a touch of Scottish stubbornness.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Edradour 10 year old tastes like
- Nose: Rich and sweet with intense aromas of dried fruit, syrup, and roasted nuts - underlying warm, spicy accents and a hint of malt
- Palate: Full-bodied and balanced - the sherry cask aging is evident in notes of raisins, figs, and spices, embedded in a malty base with subtle nuttiness
- Finish: Long-lasting and pleasantly warming - a fine spiciness lingers, accompanied by fruity sweetness and a soft aftertaste
