Portrait: What makes the Tanqueray No. Ten special
Some bottles simply sit on the shelf. Others enter the room. Tanqueray No. Ten, with its confident 47.3% ABV, clearly belongs to the latter category. Even the name sounds like he's wearing a bespoke suit and knows exactly what he's doing. The story behind it begins in 1830, when Charles Tanqueray founded his distillery in London – at a time when gin was popular, but still quite… let's say experimental in terms of quality. Tanqueray, however, had a clear commitment to precision and craftsmanship. This attitude has sustained the brand over the decades – through the highs and lows of fashion, through Prohibition overseas, and even through the destruction of the original distillery in World War II. Today, Tanqueray is produced in Scotland, yet the spirit of Victorian London still resonates. And then came No. Ten.
The name refers to the small still, number 10, in which this gin is distilled. While many products are made in large facilities, here the focus is deliberately on smaller batches. This doesn't just sound like craftsmanship, it is craftsmanship – just with a very well-pressed shirt.
The 0.7-liter bottle is a design object in itself: heavy, clearly structured, with green glass and a striking shape. It looks great in any home bar, even if it's just a kitchen tray. And the 47.3% ABV? Well, they charmingly remind us that this is no lightweight.
Tanqueray No. Ten is therefore less a mere drink than a statement: tradition-conscious, self-assured and with a history spanning almost two centuries. A gentleman among gins – but one who knows how to make an impression.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Tanqueray No. Ten tastes like
Nose: Fresh and clear with a distinct juniper presence. Bright citrus aromas – especially grapefruit and lime – come through, creating a very vibrant impression. Floral nuances like chamomile and a fine, elegant spiciness emerge in the background. Overall, the bouquet is precise, clean, and exceptionally balanced, without any overpowering alcoholic harshness.
Palate: On the palate, the gin is structured and multifaceted. Juniper forms the stable foundation, while fresh citrus notes provide vibrancy. The texture is soft and slightly creamy, which is remarkably smooth for a gin with 47.3% ABV. Subtle floral and slightly spicy components add depth and complexity. Despite its intensity, the overall impression remains harmonious and elegant.
Finish: Medium to long-lasting. The juniper lingers clearly, accompanied by dry, subtly tart citrus notes. A delicate spiciness pleasantly remains on the palate. The finish is dry, clean, and very precise – with an elegant warmth that pleasantly integrates the higher alcohol content.

Ein toller Tropfen, sowohl pur als auch mit einem leckeren Tonic.
Sehr harmonisch mit Frucht und leichten Kräutern, nichts sticht zu sehr hervor.
