Portrait: What makes the Talisker Dark Storm special
If whiskies were superheroes, Talisker Dark Storm would definitely be the one with the most dramatic intro: Thunder rumbles, seagulls squawk, a Scottish wind ruffles your imaginary kilt - and there it is. Dark. Mystical. With a look that says: "I was born in a storm."
Origin? The Isle of Skye. A Scottish island where there are more sheep than people - and probably more weather changes than pub visits. Here, the Talisker distillery has braved wind, rain, and the occasional sheep in the courtyard since 1830. For a long time the only distillery on Skye, it enjoyed a monopoly on local whisky pride - and exploits this with a rather smoky attitude.
Talisker Dark Storm is something like the gothic brother of classic Talisker. Born in particularly heavily charred oak barrels, it wears the whisky equivalent of tattooed upper arms and a leather jacket. According to legend (or the marketing department), it's supposed to show "the wildest side of Talisker." And who wouldn't want that? Finally, a whisky that looks like it rides a motorcycle at night and writes poems about sea monsters by day.
It was originally intended exclusively for travel retail - that is, for people who, at airports, amidst duty-free perfume and overpriced headphones, thought, "I need a storm in my glass."
In short: Talisker Dark Storm isn't a gentle drink for beginners. It's a statement. A North Atlantic weather report with alcohol content. And once you've got it on your shelf, you'd better have a storm-tested story at hand.
A powerful, intense dram with character – definitely not an entry-level whisky, but a highlight for fans of the smoky, maritime style.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Talisker Dark Storm tastes like
- Nose: strong smoke, like a campfire during a storm - but at sea - with salty sea air, a hint of tar and some wet ropes from the harbor (in the best sense!) - behind this lie sweeter aromas of dark vanilla, dried fruit and a slightly peppery tinge, like freshly ground black pepper on a sailing ship in winds of force 10
- Palate: full broadside! First comes the smoke – peaty, spicy, and surprisingly complex – then a wave of oak breaks across the palate, closely followed by notes of malt, roasted nuts, and sweet licorice. The maritime saltiness remains present and is accompanied by a spicy, almost chili-like tingle that is typical of Talisker. The dark oak spice from the heavily charred casks gives the whole a rich depth
- Finish: long, warm, and smoky. The pepper departs late, like a guest telling one last joke. Smoke and oak linger, as if you've just torched a well-soaked cask of sea air. Dry, but never boring, with a hint of bittersweet chocolate at the very end

Ein sehr gutes Tröpfchen. Ein typischer Talisker und für mich soetwas wie das Aushängeschild der Destille.
