John Distilleries in Goa, India produces the Brilliance from Indian barley grown at the foot of the Himalayas, the whiskey matures in exBourbon casks for three to five years.
The climate in India causes the alcohol in the barrels to evaporate extremely fast - about 12-13% per year, which is why the whiskey matures faster than its European and American relatives.

Nose: intense nougat aromas, pudding with raisins and orange blossom honey - lots of vanilla - delicate and fresh
Taste: barley and demerara sugar, spices, some cinnamon and citrus fruits
Finish: again the barley, honey and a gentle spiciness

Klasse Whisky für die Freunde süßerer Aromen

Ich war sehr überrascht. Konnte auf der Messe ein paar der Qualitäten von Paul John probieren und fand insbesondere die ungetorften Varianten für meinen Geschmack perfekt. Aber ich trinke sonst auch lieber die etwas milderen Iren. Blind wäre ich nie auf einen Inder gekommen.

Mein Vorrezensist hat leider mit seinen Aussagen recht und der Whisky ist wirklich reine Massenware ohne jegliches Profil. Der geringe Alkoholgehalt tut sein übriges und macht den Whisky geschmacklich komplett flach. Meines Erachtens taugt er nicht mal als Einsteiger Whisky - da gewöhnt sich jeder neue Whiskyfan sein Hobby sofort wieder ab. Dieses Gesöff kann maximal zum Einreiben der Füße genommen werden. Wenn dann wirklich den teureren Cask Strength als indischen Whisky. Hier liegt das Preis-Leistungs Verhältnis deutlich besser und dieser Whisky ist geschmacklich auch wirklich komplex.

Die Billigvariante von Paul John kann mit dem "Classic Select Cask" oder den Cask-Strength-Abfüllungen m.E. nicht mithalten. Er scheint auf jeden Fall jünger zu sein und der geringere Alkoholgehalt tut das Seinige dazu, dass ich lieber etwas mehr investieren würde, um dafür den spitzenmäßigen "Classic Select Cask" im Glas zu haben. Auf jeden Fall ist der "Brilliance" ein günstiger Einsteiger-Whisky für denjenigen, der sich in das Thema "Indischer Whisky" erstmal eintrinken will.
