Portrait: What makes the Glenglassaugh TORFA special
The Glenglassaugh TORFA is a special single malt whisky from the Scottish Highlands that ushers in a new era of the Glenglassaugh distillery, which was revived in 2008. This is the first peated whisky bottled since the reopening – a clear sign that the distillery not only wants to build on its historical roots, but also explore new avenues.
The name Torfa comes from Old Norse and simply means "peat" - a fitting homage to the main character of this whisky. With a phenol content of around 20 ppm in the malted barley, the Torfa is moderately smoky, making it interesting for both fans of smoky whiskies and newcomers to this world of flavors.
Exclusively former bourbon casks were used for maturation, allowing the whisky a clear, unadulterated expression. The omission of sherry or wine casks focuses on the combination of smoke, barley, and cask character. Glenglassaugh TORFA represents a modern interpretation of a Highland malt with a peaty touch - powerful, distinctive, and with a maritime influence reminiscent of the rugged North Sea coast.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Glenglassaugh TORFA tastes like
- Nose: Distinct, but not overpowering peat smoke, reminiscent of campfire smoke. The smoke has a sweeter than medicinal feel, giving it an inviting depth. Accompanying fruity aromas such as green apples, ripe pears, and a subtle citrus note add freshness. In the background, one also detects malty notes, a hint of vanilla, and a touch of honey. A subtle maritime breeze completes the aroma and indicates the distillery's proximity to the coast
- Palate: Powerful and full-bodied on the palate. The smoke is present, yet well-integrated and harmonizes with a pleasant sweetness. Malt, toffee, and vanilla characterize the flavor, complemented by baked apples and a hint of candied citrus fruits. Spicy components such as white pepper, a hint of ginger, and light notes of nutmeg add complexity. The texture is oily and smooth, making the whisky very drinkable
- Finish: The finish is medium to long and leaves a lasting impression - the smoke remains noticeable, but slowly retreats, making way for sweet malt, dry oak, and a fine, salty minerality - subtle notes of licorice or dark chocolate also emerge in the aftertaste, giving the finish an elegant depth
