Herald - distilled in India - matured on Heligoland
Amrut Distilleries once again breaks the boundaries of the whiskey world.
For their recent offer, the distillery chose a beautiful, if remote island, as the place where four barrels of whiskey distilled in Bangalore should ripen. For such a project, one could have expected that Amrut would choose an island in the heart of the Whiskey's homeland, but the Indian distillery has once again taken an unconventional route and selected an island 70km off the North German coast.
Heligoland is a unique, original place with breathtaking, red sandstone cliffs and gently rolling sand dunes. The island is not only free of cars and has a clean environment, but also owes the Gulf Stream a mild climate, in which despite its location relatively far to the north exotic plants and a rich wildlife thrive.
From Bangalore, the lush green "garden city" of India, the malt whiskey barrels were transported to Germany to be loaded onto a ship and begin the two and a half hour crossing from Cuxhaven to the idyll of the North Sea island.
There, the German importer of Amrut, Prineus, had made appropriate preparations so that the malt whiskey in the barrels could go through its maturation process. Not only is Helgoland's climate in stark contrast to tropical India, but barrel storage has also been practically at sea level, while the Amrut distillery in Bangalore is at 920m above sea level.
The impressive result is the unique new Amrut Herald.
In order to take into account the pure, natural atmosphere of Heligoland, the whiskey was bottled as simply as possible.
It has not been filtered or thinned, and in fact the barrels bottled by hand are noted in the casks.
This was the first time that Heligoland whiskey was matured and bottled; the bottles from one of the barrels will remain on the duty-free island. Like Amrut's previous limited editions, Amrut Herald will only be available in limited quantities at selected locations and will certainly become a popular bottling.
