Kilderkins, also called Rundlets, is the name of a barrel size (18 gallons or about 68 liters of content), which was widespread in the 17th and 18th centuries in Campbeltown.
Springbank has revived these small barrels and now refills whiskeys from such barrels.
The advantage of small barrels is the lower maturation time required for the whiskey.
The fact that more whiskey - in comparison to large barrels - has contact with the wood, it ripens much faster and absorbs the influences of the wood faster.
