The Wemyss family (pronounced Wiems) has been in the whiskey business since the beginning of the 20th century, starting with John Haig, who built his first distillery on the family property.
The family has been based in Wemyss Castle on the Firth of Fife near Edinburgh for more than 800 years.
The name Wemyss means "cave" and reflects the closeness of the family to coast and sea.
Wemyss has always been growing barley for the whiskey industry
Wemyss bottlings rarely reveal the distilleries that make or are part of their blends.
