Portrait: What makes the Johnnie Walker Double Black special
The Johnnie Walker Double Black is a powerful extension of the classic Black Label range and is aimed specifically at fans of more intense, smoky blended whiskies. It was officially added to the range in 2011, after initially being available as a travel retail exclusive. Stylistically, it is based on the well-known Black Label, but goes significantly further in terms of depth, peat, and dark cask notes. Particularly smoky malts – primarily from Islay and the Western Highlands - as well as more heavily charred oak casks are used.
Like all Johnnie Walker bottlings, the blend is produced by Diageo, the world's largest spirits company. The Johnnie Walker brand itself has its origins in the early 19th century in Kilmarnock, Scotland. For over 200 years, it has stood for high-quality, consistent blends – and is now the best-selling Scotch whisky brand in the world.
The Double Black appeals to whisky connoisseurs and beginners alike, who are looking for a more intense, smoky experience within the Johnnie Walker portfolio - without switching to the realm of pure Islay malts. It is therefore an ideal "next step" after the classic Black Label and impresses with its dark, distinctive characteristics.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Johnnie Walker Double Black tastes like
- Nose: Strong and smoky with a clear influence of roasted oak - peat smoke is in the foreground, accompanied by dark caramel, vanilla, and dried fruits - a slightly maritime aroma resonates, along with a hint of spices and charcoal - significantly more intense than the Black Label
- Palate: Full-bodied and complex - spicy smoke unfolds immediately, carried by notes of dark chocolate, oak, and nutmeg - a subtle sweetness of raisins and vanilla balances the smoky depth - the blend appears stronger and denser than the classic Black Label, with a clear focus on peated whiskies from Islay and the Highlands
- Finish: long, warm, and smoky - the ash notes remain present and are accompanied by dark wood, malt, and a dry, slightly peppery spice - subtle sweetness fades slowly - a powerful finish with character

Den Black Label fand ich schon gut, als ich mich noch nicht so für Whisky interessiert habe. Als Daly Whisky hervorragend, reicht aber nicht an meinen Favorit, Lagavulin 26 Jahre, heran.
