The charm of Dunnottar Castle lies mainly in its picturesque location. The castle ruins are located on a cliff connected to the mainland by a path in the North Sea on the Scottish east coast, just 26 km south of Aberdeen, and south of the town of Stonehaven.

The rock on which the castle stands has already been inhabited in Piktic times. In the 9th century, King Donald II defended Dunnottar against the Vikings. However, his death was in vain and the Vikings destroyed the precursor building of the castle.
In 1685, 122 men and 45 women, so-called Covenanters, were imprisoned here in a cellar because they were Protestants and thus they opposed royal sovereignty in all spiritual matters. In a space of almost 50 square meters and without sanitation most of them stayed 2 months.
37 of them were dismissed after they revoked their conviction. 25 were able to flee, the rest died or were shipped to the West Indies. This event went down in history as Whigs Vault [1].
The castle is known as the backdrop of the Hamlet filming with Mel Gibson in 1990.
