Hier findest Du unsere Auswahl rauchiger Whiskys. In den meisten Fällen sprechen wir bei rauchigem Whisky von Whisky, das aus Rauchmalz hergestellt wurde. Die klassische Herstellung von rauchigem Whisky ist die aus Schottland. Dort wird seit Jahrhunderten zum Trocknen des Gerstenmalzes Torffeuer verwendet. Durch die Verbrennung des Torfs, englisch “peat”, wird viel Rauch freigesetzt, das sich im Malz als Raucharoma niederschlägt. Das Malz wird im wörtlichsten Sinne geräuchert. So entstehen rauchige Whiskys. Besonders stark rauchige Whiskys findest Du auf der Insel Islay. Islay Whiskys zeichnen sich durch eine kräftige torfige Rauchnote aus und durch einen maritimen Einschlag. Denn hier enthält das verbrannte Torf viele Algen und andere Pflanzen aus Küstennähe. Torf ist nichts anderes als lange konserviertes Pflanzensediment und so zeichnet auch jede Torf-Region ein individuelles Aromenprofil. Torf von den Orkneys zum Beispiel bringt bei Highland Park andere Rauchnoten zum Vorschein, als bei Ardbeg, Laphroaig und Lagavulin auf Islay. Andere berühmte rauchige Scotch Whiskys sind Talisker von der Isle of Skye und Ledaig von der Isle of Mull. Auch außerhalb Schottlands gibt es rauchige Whiskys, jedoch verwenden auch diese meist schottisches Torfmalz. Ein tolles Beispiel für nicht-schottische rauchige Whiskeys ist der Connemara Peated aus Irland und die indischen Whiskys Amrut Peated und Paul John Bold.
