Imperial

Translation: The Imperial
Region: Speyside

Every end is the beginning of something new.

Unfortunately, Imperial recently became part of the "Lost Distillery", the forever-lost, demolished distillery. For a long time there were rumors that the disused distillery is still being put back into production. But owner Pernod Ricard's new plans ruined all hope in 2013: a state-of-the-art new "super distillery" was to be built on the site.
The old Imperial buildings were demolished and the new distillery called Dalmunach was built in record time. The architecture looks really very successful, went into operation in late 2014 and is expected to produce up to 10 million liters per year.
Will the new malt be as good as the Imperial? We know that in a few years. Let's just be optimistic and believe that something good new can emerge from the end of the one.

A little history

The distillery was founded in 1897 by Thomas MacKenzie - in the same year that Queen Victoria celebrated her "Diamond Jubilee".
The first Spirit ran in 1898 from the unusually large pot stills, but a year later, the distillery had to close for the first time. In the following decades, the owners changed more often, again and again the distillery was closed, reopened and closed again. Overall, Imperial was out of operation for around 60% of her entire life.
From 1998 Imperial was shut down again - this time forever. Since 2005, the distillery belonged to Pernod Ricard, which they demolished in 2013 to make room for the new Dalmunach distillery.

What do I actually have in the glass?

The Imperial is a relatively powerful Speysider with full body, spice, heather honey and quite hints of peat.

3 reasons to love Imperial

1) Because sometimes the painting looks like the little brother of Highland Park.
2) Because we always love what we have lost.
3) Because with the successor Dalmunach maybe something big grows up.

The one drama for the lonely island

The 18-year-old from Signatory's "Un-chillfiltered" series has not only spicy Heidenoten highly interesting, but also a great value for money.
