The 17th edition of the Scottish personalities is dedicated to a true survivor:

Alexander Selkirk (1676-1721)

His name is commonly unknown, his adventures as shipwrecked on a desert island knows almost every child.
Alexander Selkirk was a seafarer and was abandoned in 1704 at the age of 28 after an argument with his captain on an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean.
He had to wait five years to be rescued until he returned to his homeland in 1709 and reported on his experiences.
The writer Daniel Defoe was inspired by these adventures to his novel Robinson Crusoe.
