3 friends and a crazy idea ...
Once upon a time there were three friends - two fishermen and one food engineer - they felt that they should give their lives another direction. They wanted to start something new. Something she fulfills. They went to a pub. There they drank, talked, considered - and decided to open their own distillery. In the same year they put the idea into action and were successful from the start. For their Irish whiskey, liqueur, gin & vodka, the three friends received much praise and moved after only a few years with the distillery, so they had more space. And so they distilled happy and satisfied to this day.
Sounds like a fairy tale? But is true.
A little history
The West Cork Distillers were founded in 2003 by Denis McCarthy, Ger McCarthy and John O'Connell. The associated distillery was built in Union Hall, County Cork, and began production in 2004. The first spirit that came out of the stills was marketed as "Kennedy Irish Whiskey". In addition to blended and malt whiskey, they also produce liqueurs, gin and vodka. In 2013, the distillery moved to Skibbereen because the old premises became too small.
The West Cork Distillery is one of only two Irish distilleries that is not part of any large, international corporation (the other being the Dingle Distillery, founded in 2012). It is also the only distillery in Ireland that malt its barley exclusively on its own.
What are they doing?
As "West Cork" both blended and malt whiskey is offered. There is also the Drombeg Whiskey Liqueur, the Lough Hyne "Spirit Liqueur" and the Kennedy, a kind of liqueur for which different whiskeys are "pickled" in a special process in a malt mash and enriched with different flavors. Under the name "Two Trees" are also offered a gin, a vodka (or more precisely: vodka) and a Poitín, a strong, clear spirit that is to remember the tradition of the black distillery.
3 reasons to love West Cork
1) Because dreams can come true.
2) Because nothing is about good friends.
3) Because the West Cork Distillers are full of good ideas.
The one drama for the lonely island
The 10-year-old West Cork Single Malt is the oldest distillate of this still-young distillery - and an Irish malt whiskey from the picture book: lots of fruit, vanilla and delicate sweetness.
