Several years after the distillery was built in 1845 as "New Lochnagar", new neighbors moved in next door. Queen Victoria personally had bought the neighboring Balmoral Castle as her summer residence. Shortly thereafter, Begg invited the Queen and her husband Prince Albert to visit the distillery. Not, however, without pointing out, they may be on time. The two were on time - and Queen Victoria was so impressed by the rehearsal drama that she appointed Begg the royal court purveyor the very next day. New Lochnagar became Royal Lochnagar.

A little history

The current distillery was founded in 1845 by John Begg under the name "New Lochnagar". However, as early as 1823 a distillery called "Lochnagar" had been built by a James Robertson nearby. However, this was destroyed by arson - as well as her successor, the Robertson 1841 built.
In 1845, John Begg received a long-term lease for the property on the south bank of the River Dee, where he built the "New Lochnagar" distillery.
After the visit of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1848, Begg became the official purveyor to the purveyor and the distillery was renamed "Royal Lochnagar".
After the death of John Begg in 1882, his son Henry took over the distillery. In 1906, the distillery was completely renovated by his children.
In 1916, Royal Lochnagar went to John Dewar & Sons, who in 1825 became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL).
In 1963 and 1967 the distillery was extensively renovated.
It is now part of Diageo, the malt is among other things a central component of the premium blend "Johnnie Walker Blue Label".
